Painting Black & White Portraits | An AIRBRUSH Tutorial
Painting portraits in monochrome is a great exercise in value study. Since there are no colors used besides black and white, you get to focus all of your attention on values and how they mold and sculpt the structures of the face. In this first part we will be painting in both eyes, the eyebrows, the nose, and setting up some of the values within the cheeks. You will notice in this portrait that the black and white mixtures gives this overall painting a cooler temperature than one completed in just transparent black. I will follow this tutorial up with another grisaille just using a transparent black so that you can see the difference between the two techniques. This painting is a 24x18" ...

Airbrush TIP DRY? Here's a SIMPLE solution
Просмотров 51 тыс.Месяц назад
If you've started airbrushing with a water based acrylic paint, you may have noticed that your airbrush might begin to perform poorly after a few minutes of spraying. One of the most common issues is paint drying on the tip of the needle- aka tip dry. The HARDEST PART of Painting...

The most difficult part of painting or drawing isn't the work involved, dealing with mistakes, or learning advanced techniques. Although frustrating at times, it's all part of the process. Should I allow it to dry after the sanding/leveling with tape knife step? That is, should I let it dry before polishing with a cloth/shop towel? I am concerned that if I don't, the slurry that is filling the cracks will get wiped off. Thank you so much for this video!!

    • @theartworkshop
      @theartworkshop 2 дня назад

      That is how I used to paint with an airbrush. I did it that way for many years. I found the odd color shifts difficult to manage when spraying opaque colors to lighten areas. It's also difficult to get a specular highlight as bring as paper or gesso with an airbrush, since layers are sprayed so thinly. I do still use a technique like that for oil painting and traditional paint brushes.

    This is my biggest problem with airbrushing. To Gesso to get a smooth surface is messy beyond belief and time consuming. Other surfaces like airbrush paper and clayboard are expensive especially for practice and learning. When all said and done basic cartridge paper is fine as long as you don’t want to erase and by learning to airbrush without erasing opens so many doors for substrate choices.

    • @theartworkshop
      @theartworkshop 2 дня назад

      I agree with you. Gesso is a messy process and isn't for everyone. Remember the most important rule- there are a million ways to paint a picture. You have to find a surface that makes the process fun and works for your techniques. Gesso sounds like it's not for you. Cotton/rag paper like arches without gesso is a great surface. Another nice surface is illustration board. It's basically paper with a cardboard backing so it's rigid to work on. You can paint on it and erase into decently. It is absorbent so its more difficult to erase than a non absorbent surface. You can also paint without erasing, and just opaque colors for your highlights. Keep exploring and experimenting Cyril. Find the surface you love, because you eventually will.

  • @thecentralscrutinizerr
    @thecentralscrutinizerr 4 дня назад

    The way I do it is instead of pulling the gesso in the same direction each time, pull from left to right, then top to bottom. This allows the gesso to get into those low lying areas where pulling in one direction doesn't quite do it. It will eliminate having to go back a re-sand those trouble areas. You may still have to do it, but there won't be as many to do. Also, on the first pass, if you DO apply some pressure to the taping knife, if forces the gesso into the canvas and covers those low lying areas. Not a lot of pressure, you just want to slightly impress the gesso into the canvas instead of merely on the canvas. On the second (or third) coats, no pressure is needed. I pull the slurry from left to right, top to bottom. Comes out smooth as glass.

    "White" isn't a color. "White" is the absence of color. "Black" is all the colors, except "White" because "White" is the absence of color. "Black" mixed with the absence of color "White" decreases the color "Black" to form "Grey" by removing color and lightening the shade. By contrast, you cannot produce "cold". You can only remove "heat". This is a law of thermodynamics. The removal of "heat" lowers the temperature to produce "cold". This is how your freezer and air conditioner works. The removal of color produces "cold". Cold is "White" like snow and ice. The above has nothing to with race because there actually are no "White" or "Black" races. If the "White" woman in the above images were actually "White", she would blend in with the "White" background all the images are superimposed upon. As one can clearly see, she's not "White". NOBODY IS, just as nobody is "Black". There is no such thing as a "Black" race nor is there any such thing as a "White" race. There are only shades of brown in the races and ethnicities of humans. Some are darker, some are lighter. We are all human. This could be perhaps the reason artists often (but not always) see the beauty in all people.

    Vallejo Model Air is notorious for tip dry until I discovered a solution using Vallejo Flow Improver (70%), Vallejo Airbrush Thinner (20%) and Vallejo Retarder Medium (10%) …I mix in a Vallejo plastic bottle, 35 ml. I thin Vallejo Model Air 1:1 with this solution and it sprays with barely if any tip dry; trigger control as you stated combined with this mixture is key. Takes a little longer to dry but I can mask the next day without any paint being removed. This concoction also works with Mission Models Paint (Createx family). I can honestly say that this mixture allows me to spray as effortlessly as using lacquers; absent their toxic fumes. Peace
